A license is helpful for clients to ensure that the person they are working with has adequate education, work experience and has been supervised. In order to be licensed a clinician needs 2000 client hours that were supervised, presently I’m in the 4000 range. I would be a lot more marketable if I just followed protocol and aliened myself with a licensing board, but I cannot bring myself to do it, despite knowing it would make my life easier.

As a therapist I have grappled with numerous facets of the psychological profession, critically disagreeing with the current system that I’ve participated in since 2014. I don’t want to continue working in a system that I see as perpetuating beliefs and systems that are oppressive.

-Diagnoses have been created in a capitalist system in which health is determined by how well one functions and produces in the current social system. Those very same diagnoses historically have been created by cis white men, therefore the DSM reflects a secular, middle-class Anglo-American perspective. It does not consider systems of oppression, multicultural perspectives and spirituality.

- Insurance companies require these said diagnoses in order to pay for treatment and wield power to say what types of treatment they will and will not pay for based on what will be cheapest for them, not what’s in the best interest of the client.

-The American health insurance system is a for profit enterprise that benefits from sickness, and contributes to outrageous costs, it simply would not pay for the work I’m interested in practicing.

So I’m going rouge. I’m leaving the system in order to practice the ethic of being “client centered.”
